Drenova Local Museum

About the Museum

Drenova has a dramatic history, especially in the 20th century, where it shares the fate of the City of Rijeka – changes in states, social systems, economic circumstances. At one point, by setting a boundary, it cuts ‘half’, breaks the community and creates trauma, the consequences of which are visible even today. But the passage of time is slowly working on its own – there are fewer and fewer living witnesses. The development of modern society and the processes of globalization are rapidly devaluing and erasing historical memories present in small communities. Historical facts are simply lost and the younger generations of the people of Drenovci and Rijeka do not have a perception of how they lived, not 200 or 1000 years ago, but not even 20 or 40 years ago.

Old items and clothes are thrown away, customs disappear, and the immigration of the new population marginalizes the local dialect, which is slowly disappearing from everyday use. We consider it our obligation, while there are still living witnesses of the past, to collect and record their memories and, as far as possible, to preserve the cultural heritage and identity of Drenova.

Our goal is to offer young people and tourists content that will meet their needs, awaken curiosity about the history of their own region and at the same time will be useful to them, both in building their own personality and as knowledge and skills useful in future work and life. It is possible that the name "museum" is very ambitious, but formalisms are not important in this project, but the idea of gathering, socializing and preserving historical memories.
