Drenova Neighbourhood Day - Digital Day

Digital day

The Digital Day is a demonstration of advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, the ČAI project, digital assistants and an interpretation of the role of robots in museums. The central point of the program is a discussion of Transhumanism and the impact of artificial intelligence on modern society.

Digital Day of the Drenova Neighbourhood

The digital day that took place on Sunday began with the presentation of the Drenov artist Antun Ozbolta He presented his way of creating images – with the help of a computer program. We can notice that his works nicely complement today's topics of workshops and lectures. You can also see the selection of his works at the following link:

At the same time, Damir Medved demonstrate how CHAI uses technology Fast Style Transfer, creates new works of art through the transformation of existing images or webcam content. You can do it yourself try out how it works (Be patient on older computers)!

Chai

Then Damir demonstrated CHAI – Chakavian Artificial Intelligence – a project to create a museum assistant who will ultimately talk to museum visitors and in the Chakavian dialect. Important help was given to us by our dear guest Dragica Stanić from Kastav. Courtesy of the author Cvjetane Miletić, we got her capital work The Catastrophic Speech in digital form, which allowed us to create a language database and basic NLP interaction. We were presented with the current possibilities of the system interacting with it through a voice interface in the literary Croatian language, since the Chakavian version is not complete (Corona pandemic unfortunately stopped this part of the project given that a large number of speakers need to be recorded in order to make a step-by-step model of the language). Two variants of the ČAI system have been created, The first simpler based on Chatterbot technology, and other more advanced, based on the RASA Platform. RASA is the final technology chosen to create the final version of ČAI. Our collaborator Marin Kružić, has programmed in his spare time a web interface that allows us to search the database of the Regional Museum and present them. Demo You can try it yourself!

Artificial Intelligence and Transhumanism

The last part of the program consisted of presentations by four participants. The Deputy Mayor also joined us. Marko Filipović.

Lecturers and guests, full Covid equipment

At the beginning is doc.dr.sc. Jonathan Lerga the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka presented the activities the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security University of Rijeka. This newly established center will represent an important lever for the further development of AI projects in our City and beyond. Especially since one of the focus areas is preservation of cultural heritage – and there is a serious cooperation ahead of us on the next phases of the ČAI-project ⁇

One of the co-authors of the CHAI project dr. sc. Benedict Perak from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka (Laboratory for Cultural Complexity Research) introduced us through a lecture “From Conversations with Artificial Intelligence to Trans-Humanism” into the main topic of this day.

Then he whereas (he has just submitted a doctoral thesis entitled: Human – AI Symbiosis: Possibility for Moral Augmentation) dr.sc. Tomislav Miletić, held via video link from Kyoto, Japan a lecture on Transhumanism, but also the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on social relations in Japan. It was two o'clock in the morning, but that didn't stop him from talking to us. excellent lecture.

In the end, assoc.dr.sc. Sven Maričić from the Department of Technical Studies of the University of Pula gave his (optimistic) view of the development of technology and its acceptance in our society and beyond. A special thank you goes to him because he gave us two robotic hands for the purpose of the exhibition the Visio Scientific Research Institute of Pula. Really great lecturers and a great evening, but see for yourself:

And finally, a pleasant get-together with a party.

Drenova Neighbourhood Day - Nature Day

Drenova Neighborhood Days - Nature Day

The program started in the courtyard of the museum from where we went for a walk in the woods with our guests. We found several shrubs and trees of cornel, and some still had fruit on them. With the help of the iNaturalist mobile app, we recorded their position and photographed them. The data is stored in our “Cornellian Cherry Data Collection” project as part of which we will work on updating the data during the spring of next year.

We continued socializing in the museum. Professors from the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka Ph.D. Željka Peršurić and Ph.D. Lara Saftić Martinović held presentations “In search of the superfruit of our region – the forgotten” drenjula “about the bioactive components of cornel (fruit and leaves) and the possibilities of introducing cornel into the diet and even through functional food. The brochure’ Cornel – ancient medicine, new research’.

We concluded the Nature Day with a lecture by Professor Boštjan Surina, a botanist from the Natural History Museum of Rijeka “Biodiversity of the Liburnian Karst”.

Nature Day

On the second day, Saturday, the program was dedicated to nature.

We started with the morning filming for the TV show "Good Morning Croatia" in which we briefly talked about the healing properties of drains, as well as about the Drina Cadastre project. And after that, we filmed a piece for KanalRi.

The afternoon part of the program began in the courtyard of the local museum, from where we went for a walk along the Drenov promenade with our guests. In the real forest landscape, we found more shrubs and drainage trees, and some even had fruits.

With the help of a mobile app iNaturalist (application and use of the application is free of charge) we recorded their position and photographed them. The data has been saved in our project “Cornellian Cherry Data Collection” where we will work on updating the data in the spring of next year.

Afternoon lectures

We continued in the museum. Professors from the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka dr.sc. Željka Peršurić and dr.sc. Lara Saftić Martinović gave presentations “In search of the superfruit of our region – forgotten ‘dranjula’“ on the bioactive components of drains (fruit and leaf) and on the possibilities of introducing drains into the diet, including through functional food. A brochure was also presented “Dren – ancient medicine, new research“.

We concluded Nature Day with a lecture by Professor Boštjan Surina, botanist from the Natural History Museum Rijeka “Biodiversity of Liburnian karst“.

Recording of expert lectures held on Drenova

After the lecture, the gathering continued with liqueur and candy made of drains prepared by our Vesna.

Friday 9 October 2020 Opening ceremony and Culture Day with lecture and exhibition on the topic of feminism, presentation of the website The majority, and the majority and a video of the same name

The first day of the presentation took place in a new-normal atmosphere to which we are not accustomed but we have adapted technologically. The event was held without an audience that could only follow us through digital platforms.

The choir performed three songs for this occasion, but the performances were pre-recorded and played to the audience at the opening and online.

On behalf of the Drenova Neighborhood Vesna Lukanović She reminded us of our many years of participation in the Rijeka project ECOC 2020 which goes all the way to the program book for Rijeka's candidacy. Exhibition Damnatio Memoriae

The focus of the exhibition will be the issue of erasing history under the title Damnatio Memoriae and its real or potential impact on the reinterpretation of historical events from closer or further history.
Mundaneum Archives presents an exhibition on pacifism and the evolution of the movement through time in Belgium, as its position between the two great powers twice resulted in terrible destructions in the 20th century. The culture of remembrance was (and continues to be) key to the development of Belgian society as inclusive and multicultural.
Society Without Borders deals with the theory and practice of erasing “undesirable” content throughout our recent history. We are particularly interested in the period from 1945 to 1990, which was eliminated from our collective consciousness.

Podcast - presentation lectures

And “Opisivano” is everything - from street names, TIPSS textbooks, partisan monographs, to professional literature on ekavica and numerous books for children.
Today we are witnessing a situation where there is no longer an example of Jovan Jovanović the Dragon in our textbooks as examples from our neighboring countries, but through digital media Serbian trash youtuber was imposed on our youth Grandma Piggy.
It is quite clear that the passage of time, and especially such major socio-political changes, send much that no longer makes sense to preserve to the “poaching chamber of history”.

With the opening of the exhibition...

However, as with excessive use of cleaning products in hygiene, the consequences can be devastating: the development of even stronger strains of the virus or in this case disastrous and retrograde social concepts.

Living room in Kastav - pussy stories

Conversations about old widows

“Neighborhood Kastav” organized on 15 February the meeting of Neighborhoods, ECoC Rijeka 2020 through the “Living Room” program in the romantic space of Idičina peknjica.”

Numerous customs connect us with common "root", speech and commemorations, but we still differ in this, it is OUR REAL FOUNDATION", the hosts said.

The transfer of knowledge about individual užanci and the almost forgotten details of these užanci to the given topics will be recorded by audio-video recording, based on the presentation of the representatives of the neighborhoods.

An "audio-video dictionary" will be created, which will be the basis for the processes of preserving the Chakavian language and customs of our region, the educational process and possible scientific papers and research.

This document will be a permanent trace of the richness of the heritage of our region- Chakavian Speech and Traditions.

“Neighborhood Drenova” was represented by Silvana Šuperina and Dinko Mavrinac, who have been active for years in preserving a tradition that is slowly disappearing.

They spoke at the Drenovska Čakavica about the former burgundy customs and what has been preserved from the customs, above all on Gornja Drenova.

Night of Museums for the 8th time!

Night of Museums for the Eighth Time Held at the Drenove Heritage Museum

The screening of the film, the exhibition and the lecture held yesterday at the Drenove Heritage Museum dealt with our ongoing projects : Mundaneum (archives from Belgian Mons), Topotek (.....) and ČAI – Chakavian Artificial Intelligence.

We started with an interesting film about the life of Paul Otlet – a visionary established by Mundaneum.

Interacting with the audience is our favorite part of the evening. Many visitors, including our youngest fellow citizens, actively participate and ask questions about the topics we deal with. We are pleased that the merging of "old" topics and new technologies is resonating among young people. Benedict Perak nicely explained why the Topoteka project is important in the context of preserving the memory of ordinary citizens, and promoting Citizen Science initiatives.

Damir Medved briefly explained where we are currently with our ČAI project, and we had the opportunity to talk to them ⁇

And among the more "mature" part of the visitors, there was an interest in collaborating in the workshops that we will organise during February. The first topic of the workshop will deal with the preservation of family and traditional memories (photos, documents and memories) through the project Topoteka. The second topic is the continuation of "cooperation" with our ČAI.

About everything soon!

MALICA

Olinda Doričić is a girl with an enlarged photo that illustrates the CHAI project in our museum.

He is now 94 years old and lives in Italy. He also visits his native Drenova once a year. She recognized herself, her parents, relatives and other people from the photo.

She also told us about the location where the photo was taken, and it is a place only 50 meters away from the Heritage Museum.

This is her story:

Night of Museums 2020 on Drenova

Night of Museums 2020

This year again, in cooperation with the Museum of the City of Rijeka, the Society Without Borders (Neighborhood Drenova – 27 Neighbourhoods) is organising Night of Museums 2020. with the following programme:

  • Screening of a documentary about life Paul Otlet 's, visionary, inventor and peacemaker.

As part of our collaboration with Mundaneum archives, we have ensured the screening of Françoise Levie's film about the life and work of Paul Otlet. Otlet is the founder of Mundaneum, the inventor of the UDC system and the application of microfilming in archives, and a great fighter for world peace. The film is a co-production of the Belgian national television RTBF, Sofidoc and WildHeart Productions.

  • Dr.sc. Benedict PerakPresents the project Topoteka, why is it extremely important to us for Rijeka and Drenova

Neighborhood Drenova participates as a partner in the project Topoteka Rijeka: Open Days of Remembrance, and thus gradually the Drenov archive of over 12,000 documents will become part of Europeana! The project leader is the Laboratory for Cultural Complexity Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka, led by Dr. Perak, and in addition to the Drenova Heritage Museum, partners are ICARUS Croatia and Memoryscapes – Time Capsules.

Topoteka Rijeka

The events entitled Topoteka Rijeka – Open Days of Remembrance 20.4.-9.5.2020. aim to develop a culture of remembrance in the city of Rijeka through the organisation of an on-site ‘Citizen Science’ gathering of audio-visual material and data on the history and culture of Rijeka and the representation of collected and marked content through digital installations and presentations supported by a multimedia platform published on the website rijeka.topoteka.net.

Topoteka is a digital platform that easily enables the digitization and publication of various historical sources (photos, documents, prints, AV records) and the use of interactive IT tools for their description, presentation and search.

  • Damir Medved—Hidden Secrets of the Mundaneum Archives

Mundaneum archives hide numerous very interesting documents that excellently represent the vision of its founders and outline the challenges of that time. From thousands of documents, images and graphs, the most interesting examples have been selected that will tell us the story of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, life in a colonial superpower like Belgium, but also a small state between the "superpowers" of Germany and France.

  • Talk to our Chai-I (Cakavian Artificial Intelligence) is getting smarter and smarter. Help him to be even better!

Neighborhood Drenova, as part of the 27 Neighbourhoods flagship, is implementing the ČAI project, a technological demonstrator of the application of artificial intelligence as part of the preservation of endangered languages and dialects. The project is being implemented with the support of the Kastav neighbourhood, and a functional prototype is currently being implemented with which you can have a nice conversation. In all its glory, ČAI will shine (or speak) on 11 October 2020 on the digital day of the Neighbourhood Festival – "Border Districts of Drenova".

  • The Last Chance the Mundaneum Exhibition—‘Delete things to come’ , realized within the program direction 27 Neighbourhoods, Rijeka 2020

A fascinating exhibition that brought us closer to the incredible story of visionaries from the beginning of the 2nd century. More than 100 years ago, they described in detail the world and the technologies we have been using for the last twenty years, and we deserve to consider them "Google before Google". The exhibition closes on the Night of Museums and moves to other cities...
