Revealed memorial plaque to Ivo Grohovac

On June 21, 2021, in Oktavijana Valića Street, a memorial plaque was discovered on the house where he lived and died Ivo Grohovac. He was born on this day 146 years ago in Grohovo. He was a poet and publicist who at the time of Italianization and Hungarianization fought passionately for the use of the local, Croatian language and local Chakavian speech in Rijeka and its surroundings. During his short life (he died at the age of 39 from the effects of tuberculosis) he published three collections of poems, as well as numerous articles in the Riječka glasnik, Riječka novine and Riječka nova list, in which he published under the pseudonym Tik-tak in the section Negda i sada.

Association Without Borders keeps the memory of Ivo Grohovac, and cooperates with the descendants of the Grohovac family, especially with Mrs. Stella Maček Grohovac and Mrs. Sylvie Remillard. The family financed the construction and installation of the panel on the entrance wall in front of the house at today's address Oktavijana Valića 29 in Rijeka. Today, this house is occupied by the Portner family whose courtesy is placed a plaque at the entrance to the courtyard of the house. In order to get this information about the present address of the former house of Ivo Grohovac, a real little research was conducted. Our valuable members Vesna Lukanović and Christian Grailach were helped by Mladen Urem, Head of the Archives Reading Room Department of the State Archives in Rijeka, as well as Dragica Fadljević, Director of the Department of Local Self-Government of the Department of City Self-Government and Administration of the City of Rijeka. Thank you all!

At the beginning of the ceremony, Christian Grailach read a brief review of the life and work of Ivo Grohovac, and Vesna Lukanović read Grohovac's work on toponyms Belveder and Kozala, for which Grohovac offers old names. Thus Belveder is actually Vozrinj, and the area of today's Kozala carried a number of names, some of which have been maintained to this day in the names of the streets (Brašćine, Lukovići, etc.). On behalf of the City of Rijeka, the ceremony was attended by the Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Sandra Krpan, who, together with Mrs. Stela Maček Grohovac, unveiled a memorial plaque.

The event was accompanied by numerous journalistic teams, and you can see for yourself how it looked like:

After the ceremony, we headed to the old cemetery of Donja Drenova where Mrs. Maček Grohovac, accompanied by her daughter Jasmina and granddaughter, laid flowers on the grave of Ivo Grohovac and his family.

For more details on the life and work of Ivo Grohovac, see a short presentation prepared by Chistian Grailach:

Time capsule of 27 neighbourhoods handed over to the Opatija neighbourhood

On October 15, 2020, the Opatija neighbourhood presented to the public its projects that they had as part of the 27 Neighbourhoods programme. On this occasion, we forwarded them a time capsule for the 22nd century, which has been in the Drenovo neighbourhood since 9 October. We have supplemented the capsule, like other neighborhoods, with our content, which is also a message for a finder from 2120. Davorka Medved handed over the capsule to the president of the association Žmergo Diani Kovačić on behalf of the Drenova neighbourhood and the two associations that are the holders of the program.

Drenova Neighbourhood Day - Nature Day

Drenova Neighborhood Days - Nature Day

The program started in the courtyard of the museum from where we went for a walk in the woods with our guests. We found several shrubs and trees of cornel, and some still had fruit on them. With the help of the iNaturalist mobile app, we recorded their position and photographed them. The data is stored in our “Cornellian Cherry Data Collection” project as part of which we will work on updating the data during the spring of next year.

We continued socializing in the museum. Professors from the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka Ph.D. Željka Peršurić and Ph.D. Lara Saftić Martinović held presentations “In search of the superfruit of our region – the forgotten” drenjula “about the bioactive components of cornel (fruit and leaves) and the possibilities of introducing cornel into the diet and even through functional food. The brochure’ Cornel – ancient medicine, new research’.

We concluded the Nature Day with a lecture by Professor Boštjan Surina, a botanist from the Natural History Museum of Rijeka “Biodiversity of the Liburnian Karst”.

Nature Day

On the second day, Saturday, the program was dedicated to nature.

We started with the morning filming for the TV show "Good Morning Croatia" in which we briefly talked about the healing properties of drains, as well as about the Drina Cadastre project. And after that, we filmed a piece for KanalRi.

The afternoon part of the program began in the courtyard of the local museum, from where we went for a walk along the Drenov promenade with our guests. In the real forest landscape, we found more shrubs and drainage trees, and some even had fruits.

With the help of a mobile app iNaturalist (application and use of the application is free of charge) we recorded their position and photographed them. The data has been saved in our project “Cornellian Cherry Data Collection” where we will work on updating the data in the spring of next year.

Afternoon lectures

We continued in the museum. Professors from the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka dr.sc. Željka Peršurić and dr.sc. Lara Saftić Martinović gave presentations “In search of the superfruit of our region – forgotten ‘dranjula’“ on the bioactive components of drains (fruit and leaf) and on the possibilities of introducing drains into the diet, including through functional food. A brochure was also presented “Dren – ancient medicine, new research“.

We concluded Nature Day with a lecture by Professor Boštjan Surina, botanist from the Natural History Museum Rijeka “Biodiversity of Liburnian karst“.

Recording of expert lectures held on Drenova

After the lecture, the gathering continued with liqueur and candy made of drains prepared by our Vesna.

Valuable members present their materials on the website and forum http://croinfo.net/ as well as on the website and FB profile of the association http://www.udruga051.hr/  https://www.facebook.com/udruga.051/.

There are a lot of common topics that are dealt with by our associations. We cooperated in 2016 at the Museum Night when we presented some of the members' exhibits Association 051. These were pieces of military equipment and ammunition from World War II. We are also in the Proceedings published a short story by Vladimir Tonić, a member of this association. Drenova hosted a delegation from Mundaneum (Mons, Belgium)

From 13 to 15 November 2019, a delegation from Mons (Belgium) visited Rijeka and Drenova. The reason was the opening of the exhibition. Delete things that are coming u the Drenova Local Museum.

Neighborhood Drenova cooperates with Mundaneum from Mons through the program direction of 27 neighbourhoods of Rijeka ECoC 2020. Cooperation started in June 2019.

Jean-Paul Deplus is President of the Board of Directors and Stephanie Manfroid is Chief Archivist and Scientist the Mundaneum Bibliographical Archives.

This exhibition presents Mundenaum and the work of its founder Paul Otlet (1868-1944). Paul Otlet was an encyclopedist and internationalist who worked with Henri La Fontaine to collect the entire world's knowledge. He invented a method of mapping this vast amount of information. It was the UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) system that is still in use today. His invention is also a microfilm. In addition to Mundenaum, Otlet has also worked on other major and significant projects. He lived in the period of two world wars and wanted to build Cosmopolis (World City). It was to be the capital of the whole world, working for the good of humanity and world peace. This utopian project has never been accomplished.

The Mundaneum archive itself was founded in Brussels. Throughout the 20th century, it was often devastated and neglected. Since 1993, the archives have been housed in Mons (province of Wallonia) where they were presented to the public again in 1998. Mundaneum is popular to say that it was actually a paper Google, before this one we all know and use on the Internet.

The city of Mons, like our Rijeka, was the European Capital of Culture in 2015. Mundaneum was a significant backbone of their program.

With our guests we held an interesting and eventful program. On the first day after their arrival, they visited Rijeka City Museum And they talked to Principal Ervin Dubrovic. Afterwards, we visited the exhibition. The Martyr of D'Annunzio u the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral. We then took the guests for a tour of Trsat Castle.

At the exhibition of d'Annunzi's martyr

On the second day in the morning we visited the Delta headquarters Rijeka 2020 where our guests were received by Branka Cvjetičanin and briefly introduced them to the work of the entire organization and the program direction 27 Neighborhoods. Then we're in RiHubu had a meeting with director Emina Višinić and her associate Dorian Celecer. The meeting was held not only for the delegation from Mons and the Drenov neighbourhood, but also for the delegation from Finland, the city of Oulu. Oulu is a candidate city for the title of ECOC in 2026. Guests and hosts discussed their experiences in the European Capital of Culture project. Mons, who was the ECoC, Rijeka, which is just at the beginning of its 2020 year, and Oulu, a city that aspires and is preparing to become the European Capital of Culture in 2026. After the meeting, guests from Mons and Oulu were shown the Sugar Refinery Palace and work on the restoration of wall frescoes.

Mundaneum_RiHub

The exhibition was opened at 7 p.m. Delete things that are coming. Many guests attended this event. The Drenova singing choir sang songs Drenova i My favorite river. Introductory words were given by Branka Cvjetičanin, Jean-Paul Deplus, Stephanie Manfroid, Damir Medved, Irena Grdinić on behalf of PGC and Marko Filipović Deputy Mayor of the City of Rijeka.

Sightseeing and socializing lasted until 9 p.m.

On Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a working meeting was held between the Neighborhood Drenova team and the Mons team. Indicative topics and dates for future events in which we will cooperate during 2020 have been agreed. At 13.30 we escorted our guests with Au revoir Because our cooperation is only at the beginning.

Mundaneum_Drenova

The experience of working with people from other countries and cultures enriches individuals and communities. Paul Otlet's efforts to build the utopian world of the future were driven by the idea that people should constantly acquire new knowledge. Once they get to know each other, they will no longer be driven by fear of the other and the different. We are afraid of what is unknown to us, and fear is the basis for the development of unjustified aggression towards others. Unfortunately, humanity still needs this lesson today, although the development of society and technology has provided unexpectedly great opportunities to spread our knowledge. However, we are witnessing that sometimes the processes are exactly the opposite. We close ourselves in our fences and do not want to find out new, different and sometimes opposing opinions because it is easier to live in a comfort zone. Technologies that Otlet sensed contours and significantly contributed to their development are often used to spread false information and lies. This is how ignorance and despondency are encouraged.

Learning doesn't mean learning facts by heart. Educating yourself means learning to recognize the signs that history repeats itself.

Zajc under the stars on Drenova

Dreno's Sunday evening was brightened by soprano Lorena Krstić and pianist Stipe Bilić. In the courtyard of the Heritage Museum, surrounded by woods, we enjoyed listening to the music of the young duo.

The program was divided into five short sections. In three parts we listened to solo songs by Croatian authors. The first one featured Emil Cosseto, Vinko Glasnović, Krsto Odak and Milan Prebanda. The second unit was the first intermezzo in which Stipe Bilić performed Chopin's 2nd ballad in F major (Op.38). In the central part of the program Soprano Lorena Krstić sang two compositions by Dora Pejačević and one by Josip Hatze, Božidar Kunc and Blagoje Bersa. This was followed by another intermezzo in which Stipe Bilić performed Schubert's Impromptu in B major, D.935. At the end of this great musical evening, Lorena Krstić, accompanied by Stipe Bilić, sang songs Lastavicam and Ostavljena by Ivan pl. Zajc.

Even though the evening was called Zajc under the stars, it could be called in the spirit of today's times Stars under the stars For these young artists, this is not an exaggeration. The quality of their performances was convinced by about seventy present classical music lovers, as evidenced by the long-lasting sincere applause by the Drenov audience.

In addition to commending Lorena Krstić for excellent and attractive performances of all solo songs, we also highlight the valuable contribution of Stipe Bilić. The people of Drenovci have been convinced of its musicality, excellent performances and human qualities many times. Although he is a top musician, he is above all modest and self-sufficient. When he is at home on Drenova, he often plays accompaniment to the Drenova Singing Choir, especially during their performances in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Thank you Stip and Lorena for an unforgettable evening!
